Why Recruitment?

The other day someone asked me why did I chose recruitment? This is a very good question, which no one has asked me before.

Well, apart from helping people find jobs (and making a small difference in their lives) It is my passion, its a great feeling when someone thanks you for improving their working conditions, or giving them a bigger salary to support their families. After all, we spend 75% of our lives working! So you should be happy!

Above that, I enjoy it, I enjoy speaking to companies and finding out what their needs are, what puzzle piece will complete their company, and then speaking to the candidates and finding out why they want a new job, and generally just having the opportunity to communicate and find out what people's interests are and why. And in Recruitment you are constantly learning, no day is the same as the next.

I have worked for a few different agencies, and I must be honest, I cannot work for another agency, because I strongly feel that my views on recruitment are very different to theirs. So I have ventured on my own to make a small difference in peoples lives.

Should you follow up after interviews?

A candidate contacted me with a query, which I feel a lot of Job Seekers are going through and asked if I can offer some advice on the matter...

"I sent my CV to so many companies, Iv gone on several interviews, but I never hear anything again, why is this and how can I improve this?"

In the Job Seekers Book: Your Guide to Successful Employment, it teaches you how to apply for jobs, what to say when phoning in response to an advert, and also how to follow up after the interview. (And also provides you with some great advice and tips for increasing your chances at the interview!)

Now not that you should run after the companies and agencies, but they are very busy and as I have said before they receive approximately 800+ CV's a day! And normally have about 10+ interviews a day, unfortunately they cannot get back to each and every candidate (Although they should) but there is not always enough time in the day...

To better your chances (and it also shows your interest in the position) you should give the company or agency a follow up call to see what the situation is. Now do this politely. You can say:
"Good Day, this is John Smith, I had an interview last week for the Accountant position, I would just like to follow up regarding my application".

Also keep in mind, as I have discussed before, your CV represents you in your absence, make sure your CV is professional, has all the information required (Without making it too long and boring) and appealing to companies. Your CV lands you the interview, the rest is up to you!
